Some storms build over time. You see it coming across the horizon, sensing both its movement and intensity.

Other storms come on suddenly, crashing in, changing everything in a moment's notice.

Jesus and the disciples experienced both.

So have you.

You might be feeling like this pandemic is one massive storm that won’t let up.

You’d be right.

Matthew’s Gospel relates this account:

Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. 24 Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. 25 The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!”

26 He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. - Matthew 8:23-27

As you listen to today’s episode, consider how Jesus and the disciples responded to a storm brewing in their midst.

The sea, in scripture, is often a metaphor for the wild, untamable power. And, let’s face it, that wild, untamable power isn’t something we want to experience for an extended period of time.

And, yet, you are. No, it’s not the wild, untamable power of the ocean or sea. It’s the wild, untamable power of a pandemic. Maybe it’s hit a little too close to home or maybe you’ve been able to hold it at a distance...perhaps 6 feet or more.

Leading through storms necessitates courage. Today, Tim and Sara have a conversation about leading through the storms. We talk about one specific thing you can do to navigate this (or any storm). It’s something you can do on your own or with others. It can be done virtually or in person.

As you listen to "Episode 116: Leading through the Storms," you’ll be invited to consider the storms in your life and what you need to navigate the storm.

Here’s the key: this isn’t about a long term plan. It’s simply about naming what you need today, and giving yourself permission to feel, do, or experience it.

Next week, we’ll start talking about courage and the skills needed to navigate the storms. Courageous leadership is needed in every storm. Let’s lead a movement of Jesus followers through this storm and whatever may follow.
